Reflection assignment # 5

In this research I learn that finding resources to prove your point takes a while. For instance, when you gather information from a source, you have to read the source in order to understand whether the source back up your point. Also, the sources may be false information and sometime the source isn’t fully related able to your topic. First of all, cuny library take a while to adjust since there’s many format on what to search for, like there’s multiple format of searching information. In the cuny library there is tons of information about slavery but you have to be specific of what you are going to choice or looked up to. The cuny library you had to be more specific, otherwise what you search might lead to something else. Finding a piece of evidence that could be analysis easily and related to your thesis is another issue which is why time managing is important in a research essay. These articles that you may be reading could either boost up your topic or not may the audience feel influence in any sort of way. 

    Making my introduction was difficult because I didn’t really focus on what I was going to write. I had made three changes about which question to answer in the assignment sheet. The thesis made me really think about the novel and how I was going to prove the reader what I learn by convey information that is unique, relevant, and deals with today’s society politics. 

Coming up with an argument statement was challenging at first because the author of the essay have to really find a way to connect his ideas with the thesis and novel. Also, look at the reader perspective based on what I jot down in order to make the audience get an understanding of my ideas. 

    What got me surprise is my citation of my sources. By this I mean the way of punctuating my title and citing sources. I’m still forgetting certain parts of the mla format. I had trouble on whether the last name of the author goes first or the first name but I figured out the situation. 

    The book isn’t something great but it’s interesting. I personally don’t like reading but for some reason this author of The Underground Railroad highlights the slaves circumstance that they have to face in order to gain freedom. Also, the book did a great job on revealing the emotion or feeling that this enslave african people have been through. 

Overall, the semester of FIQWS 10115 was great because the class made me see my area of weakness and understand where to improve. This class push the concept of me correcting my grammar and brainstorming a topic before handling the final version of the assignments. This class got me to understand what’s college professor expecting and the drill of giving your assignments on time or else this late work doesn’t really matter. At the end of the semester, the class really put me through some uncomfortable situation and made me changed in a certain way of thinking. The transition of highschool was also a huge impact on me because the teacher seems to take a step back and let the student deal with solving or coming up with their essay topic.

                ‘’ The Case for Reparations “

In this article, Ta-Nehisi convey the idea that people of color were belittled from  the Jim Crow law by taken advantaged and discriminated through the use of diction and imagery in order to make the reader visualize and understand what’s occurring. Jim Crow law was a way for southerners people to segregated people of color. To begin, “ The Case for Reparation ” purpose is to highlight the cases were people of color had been powerless due to the laws and activity from those who enslave them for 250 years. This is a big deal because even when everyone had freedom southerners people still search for methods to make white people who are suffering property or still be supremacy by the robbery, taxation, and penalty toward people of color when they miss a delay or not collaborated. For example, the author suggests “  Some of the land taken from black families has become a country club in Virginia . . . oil field in Mississippi . . . a baseball spring training facility in Florida ( pg 2). “ People of color were unprotected from any laws or government which gave the upper hand to white people and strip out black people from their properties. As this occurs, the lives of black families was tough growing up since young black children has to witness racism, mistreatments, harassment and inequality. The word “ taken” and “ become “ stood out because the word taken was basically meant that black people had been wiped out from their hard work and seen unimportant. The word become was basically a tool ( people of color ) were white people could use them to become more wealthy and buttpress them. Adding on, the author reveal that slavery was a form to change all white men soceconomic structure in the society which make people of color lower their standard level. For instance, “ The vending of the black body and the sundering of the black family become an economy unto themselves, estimated to have brought in tens of millions of dollars to antebellum America ( pg 14 ). “ This meant that people of color was a major factor to both white people and the economic raise due to easy labor use for such little money and a useful resource to gain more benefit. The benefit from these people of color was that white people could make a potential profit from taxation due to certain unfollowed order and make an interest on them.

Obstacle would come 

Think back to what you want to become 

There’s a lot to be discovered 

New ideas to be uncovered

So where you are 

Just reflect back to your thoughts.

Taught 

Benefit is gained later 

Don’t seem to appreciate the lessons

Dad and mom sacrifice

Must be happy with what you get

     Lessons

If you never experience failure

Economic going down, not get the result 

Glorious failure, and fire

Then you are missing out 

Oh lord, suffer.

Start questioning myself

Why is this happening ?

Adrenaline so high

Effort, Action, Dedication, 

Deal with the punishment

        Enjoyable

I went to the park

Park is where I’m heading 

Play soccer and have fun

Soccer ball I kick

Out of breath

Push, pull, pin, press, and penalty 

I run, jump, slide, dodge, score

Ball is like prey o

Keep fighting till the end

Grit, social intelligence and bravery

At the end we all handshake

Another day, another ball will be waiting

To begin, the first poem is a rap poem. Rap poem basically has to rhyme with the last word of each line but it has to make sense and tell a story. In this poem simile, assonance, true rhymes, anaphora, and enjambment are included. Try to demonstrate prosody by having every word rhyme and continue or back up the concept of mindset. My topic is about the mindset because we as humans tend to forget that what we feed our mind is the vibe or the output that we get. By the output, the result that you keep extracting, and the type of energy an individual has which is being continuing. For instance, you spill coffee on your shirt and then you fall with a stack of paper to the ground causing you to have this negative energy which allows other negativity to follow you since you keep getting mad. Furthermore, in line 9 “ It’s like an army that is invincible, “ a simile is performed which compares two objects using the word “ like” and “as.” This quote exposes the idea that the brain of a person is powerful to cause a major shift to the society by improving a company or starting something new which could either impact another person’s life by making tasks easier. Therefore, what a person comes up with could spark a new movement. 

Second poem follows the Haiku style where there’s 5-7-5 syllables integrated in the three lines for every stanza. This poem was difficult because certain words were chosen to stand out the most and organize the format of elaborating my thoughts. Poem is pathos which focus on emotion and has enjambment, assonance, consonance, and litotes. There are three stanzas to continue my flow of lessons taught by parents, we learn the main factors in our life that makes us survive in the world. Lesson means what is right and wrong, advocating for myself, stepping out of my comfort zone, and hard work to get what is desired.  An example of me being grateful to my dad is that he maintains my whole family by giving me the resources I need as I grew up, such as clothes, shelter, and food. Also, making me look for a job which was a harsh time but I manage to end up getting a job and learning how to write a resume by myself which made me realize that I could do anything in this world as long as I put my mind to it. However, my objective was to make the audience to trace or flashback a moment in their life where their parents help them go to the next stage. To recognize the beauty of having their family there when something occurred. 

Third poem is a free verse. Free verse poems basically don’t follow rhyme and any sort of rhyme scheme. The use of assonance, enjambment, ellipsis, and true rhyme since I decided to be a little bit different is to highlight the action done by Native American and the colonists. This poem was describing how native american were defending their land. Since Terry made Native American seen as an “awful creature” that was hurting the colonists. Line 10 “ Issues start to rise, “ is meant to expose the turning point when the two group of people start to use violence. 

Fourth poem explicitly talks about the lessons that we as humans tend to learn from the mistakes made in our daily activity and the knowledge gained from the event. This is a free verse poetry, pathos, logo, I still did some rhyme and incorporated true rhyme, personification, simile, enjambment, and ellipsis. Some lessons in these poems are economic going down, not getting the result, glorious failure, and fire. Economic going down concept is when a business or a person experience loss of money due to something not doing so well. Not get the result we want; refer to the moments when you like something but for some reason can’t have. Glorious failure is defined by the knowledge or key takeaway you gain from certain situations. Fired related to jobs dismissed or no longer need you as an employee. Line  20 “ Advocated, Fight, and Focus,” stood out because as an individual, a person has to speak for themselves, grit becomes important, and have the format or know the format that the person is going to work toward. 

Fifth poem I decide to use syntax and it’s a free verse poem. The poetic/ rhetorical devices are alliteration, asyndeton, polysyndeton, simile, and enjambment. Tried to involve lexicon in this poem as well. The poetic/ rhetorical devices were a way to make my poetry interesting and entertaining. Syntax was a way to make my ideas in a good format .

The main purpose is to elaborate the idea of what I do at the park. In line 7-8 “ Push, pull, pin, press, and penalty, I run, jump, slide, dodge, score, “ described the action done in a soccer game and the excitement it gets as the game becomes more intense. In a soccer game violence starts to arise when the each team are try to score in order to take the victory.

ESSAY #3

Something that I learn from essay #3 is that finding articles that are related to your topic is very difficult. Finding research articles, text, or books in the cuny library was tough. By tough I mean that sometimes there were files that only had an abstract that stopped halfway. Sometimes there were just an abstract and a website that the abstract was talking about which I clicked then there’s a blank sheet. Also, I learn that I’m not very specific and focus on multiple cases at once which made my rough draft too hard to follow. This caused me to realize that I need to plan out first and then combine ideas and figure out the process of how to elaborate them in my essay. In this essay I used the diction in order to go more in depth of a concept that I point out. Diction is a rhetorical device that focuses on specific words and convey what they are trying to highlight. I choose this rhetorical device because the quotes that I outlaid had a deeper meaning toward the audience which is why I wanted to give an analysis to reveal the theme of the evidence. While I was writing my essay this rhetorical devices made me connect some sources to today’s issues happening that people of color still face. Overall, this essay made me learn that researching is a topic that takes a lot of sources to be read in order to imply it in your writing prompt.
